Save or Spend… My style wish list and cheaper versions

As always I have a wish list of things I want that is a mile long, and full of things that are completely out of my price range. One of my favourite things to do when I have a spare ten minutes is to sit down with a drink and my laptop and browse my favourite (and expensive) sites like Selfridges and net-a-porter and choose what I would buy if I suddenly won the lottery.

As the chances of me winning the lottery are slim, even more so as I sometimes forget to buy the tickets, I try to look cheaper versions of my very favourites things that I might actually have a chance in owning.

Top of my wish list at the moment is a watch. My beloved Baby G bit the dust about a year ago, and I have been mourning it’s loss ever since. This time around I want to go for something a bit more classic and grown up, and also something that will go with many outfits. I am currently have a love affair with rose gold, and when I saw this watch by Michael Kors (bottom right) on ASOS my heart gave a very painful thump of longing. This is simply beautiful, but at £199 its not something I could ever justify buying for myself with my two small beauties to think of. Sob! However, after having a look around I managed to find this Fossil one (top left) for £75.90 on amazon which looks very similar. This is still on the expensive side, but much much cheaper than the Michael Kors version.

The other item I have been desperate for are some Marc Jacobs Mouse Flats (bottom left) which I came across on the Selfridges website. I think these are so pretty, cute and useful as they would go with loads of different outfits. These would be especially lovely in the summer to wear with summer dresses or cute shorts. But… (and its a big but) these cost around the £200 mark. Yikes. After searching through eBay I found a shop selling loads of mouse flats (top right) in lots of different colours, such as pink, red, black and beige. They even have heeled platform ones, so cute! The flats and the heels are only £29.99 each with free postage…bargain in comparison.

A staple in every woman’s wardrobe should be a pair of heeled nude pumps. My pair died a few months ago and I the gap in my wardrobe has been extremely noticeable since. So many times I have reached for them only to grit my teeth in annoyance when I remember they are gone.  In my quest for a new pair I decided to go for a pair of platform ones, as I am really short and my PLSH is very tall, and lets face it, what women doesn’t want to look taller and therefore thinner? Whilst on net-a-porter I ended up on the Christian Louboutin page and saw these nude platform pumps (bottom right). These are no longer on the net-a-porter site, but can be found elsewhere if you are desperate for them and are made of money, similar ones but without the platform cost £375 eeek! Lovely eBay came up trumps again and I found this pair of nude platforms (top left) for £19.99. If you really crave the red heel grab your favourite red nail polish and go to town!

The Chloe paddington bag is one of those iconic cult bags that nearly celebrity has been seen with, and the matching wallet (top right) is just as gorgeous, and just as expensive. If you want a similar look for less head on over to here on eBay where you can get this mustard one (bottom left) for only £6.

As you can see similar but much cheaper versions are there to be found if you spend the time looking for them.. Designer products are lovely, don’t get my wrong, but as we are in the middle of a recession it makes sense to be a bit thrifty. If you total up the cost of all four of the cheaper versions the amount of money wouldn’t probably pay for half of one of the more expensive ones.

What are you wishing for? If there is anything you desperately want send me a line and I will look for a similar but cheaper version for you! x

The Midas Touch – Gold on gold

Hello to all my beauties on this bright sunny day!

As a nod to the sunshine this weekend I wanted to paint my nails a sunshiney colour, but rather than going for a predictable yellow I went for gold sparkle on gold polish to give a sun beam effect.

I wanted to keep them fairly subtle as I had a lot of mummy things to do over the weekend, so for my first go at gold nails I chose a light gold base and then added a new purchase from saturday over the top, No7 Nail Glitter Top Coat in gold. This has tiny particles of gold glitter and larger gold hexagonal chunks of glitter in a clear polish.

no7 gold base

All the nail polishes I used were No7 from Boots, as I had a couple of their £5 off vouchers that I used on Saturday morning. The gold base is no 360, Hot to Trot. I applied two coats of this and then one coat of the Gold Glitter Top Coat over the top.

The two together gave a lovely golden sparkle to my nails, especially in the sun and made me feel a lot more summery and happy over the weekend.

Last night I needed to change my polish, as after a weekend in paddly-pools, on bouncy castles, BBQing and attending children’s 4th birthday parties, they were looking a little worse for wear.

I had been planning on redoing the same colours as before, but at the last moment decided on a different base colour as an nod to my current rose gold obsession. I thought that if I used a rosy-pink base it might give a more of a rose gold tint to the overall look of the nails. I used one of my go-to shades that I often wear on its own as an everyday colour, a No7 colour called Oyster, no120. As before my nails had two coats of the base, Oyster and one of Glitter.

While I would have preferred it if I had a proper rose gold base to use (I have my eye on Orly’s Rage), I was pleased with this result. I bought this cat ring from River Island on saturday too, after seeing it featured on a haul from Sprinkle of Glitter (Rose gold and in the shape of a cat? I was sold… especially at the price of £3!) and this looks really pretty with these nails.

I do like No7 nail polishes as they have a very smooth texture and can give a very sheer or opaque finish depending on what you wish. They don’t have the best staying power compared to other brands, but they last well enough with a top coat over them, a few days usually. I own quite a few nail polishes from No7 as I tend to buy them whenever I have a £5 off voucher.

Do you like to wear sunshine-inspired nails? What colours do you use? Let me know in the comments below! x

Loving LUSH: Honey I Washed The Kids

I saw this soap recommended in a video of Tiffany’s (makeupbytiffanyd) just after Christmas and i’ve wanted to try it ever since. I wasn’t sure about it, as I tend to use shower gel rather than soap, as it can be a bit drying for my skin, but when I recently went into LUSH I couldn’t resist the temptation anymore. I have so say I am so glad I did because this smells amazing!

LUSH Honey I Washed the Kids

The most obvious fragrances are honey and toffee, which smell so good together I swear it should be illegal. One of the greatest thing about having this soap on the side of my bath is that within a couple of days my entire bathroom was gently fragranced with the smell. I love walking in there at the moment as it smells so good.

I love the fact that it also looks like a dessert, some people say it reminds them of a flan, but I think it looks like a cross section of a creme brûlée, one of my all time favorite desserts, it looks as yummy as it smells… MUST… NOT… EAT…

LUSH Honey I Washed the Kids

This soap isn’t at all drying for my skin and leaves the faintest traces of honey and toffee on it for the day… who needs perfume hey? I use this with my body polishing puff thingy (do they have a proper name? if so please let me know) and it lathers up really well and feels so luxurious.

LUSH Honey I Washed the Kids

This costs £3.25 for 100g which is slightly more pricey than some of the LUSH products, given that this seems to get used up really quickly where it is so soft, but I think it is worth it. I can clearly see why this is one of LUSH‘s best sellers. If you want your own slice, head on over to the LUSH website to grab one or visit any LUSH store.

YSL Touche Éclat Foundation is on it’s way!

Brace yourselves Beauties, deep breaths now…

On May 16th Yves Saint Laurent had the exclusive international preview in Paris, France of their new Le Teint Touche Éclat, the foundation to accompany their massively successful and world renowned Touche Éclat highlighter pen. This is quite possibly the most highly anticipated beauty product of the year.

YSL TOUCHE ECLAT FOUNDATION The Touche Éclat highlighter/concealer pen was and is one of every girls dream products that almost everyone has, with one sold every ten seconds. I remember the excitement when I got my original one, and then again when they brought out the new shade range and I was able to get one slightly lighter. This is honestly the miracle product that everybody reaches for, from virtually every celebrity you can name (yes even the men as well hence them bringing out a male version) to probably most women you walk past in the street. The idea of being able to have a full face of this magic stuff is enough to make me swoon.

This year is YSL’s 20th birthday and in celebration they are finally launching this foundation, after a rumoured 10 years in the making.

YSL TOUCHE ECLATE FOUNDATION The packaging of this has all the class you would expect and demand from YSL, with the classic gold coloured lid to top off a beautifully simple and elegant circular glass bottle. It also features a pump (also in gold) applicator which has many beauty critics cheering loudly, as the one grumble about the highlighter was the un-washable brush application method.

There are a whooping 22 shades in the colour range for this, so you can expect to find one to suit you whatever your skin tone. They are arranged in three categories, Warm – Beige Dore, Cool - Beige Rose and neutral – Beige.

YSL Touche Eclat Foundation Shade RangeImage originally from Fleur de Force

The science-y bit behind this is that YSL claim to removed all opaque powders, meaning there will be no cake-y masked effect and instead replaced them with a ‘soft focus gel’ which is meant to smooth away imperfections without masking the skin. This is also meant to feel extremely weightless in texture too, making it even more comfortable and easy to wear.

“I wanted a foundation that gives the entire face a lively, vibrant light,” said YSL’s creative director of make-up,  Lloyd Simmonds. “Natural, feather-light, but with a touch of very Parisian, very Saint Laurent sophistication that beautifies the skin and makes the complexion expressive. I like to call it a dewy luminosity, as fresh as dew on the complexion – and definitely not shiny.” This is meant to used in tandem with the highlighter as Simmonds explains ”They are the perfect duo. The foundation unifies the entire face, whilst Touche Éclat reinforces the light effect, especially on dark under-eye circles, and to unify the area around the lips and to attract light on the temples and cheekbones.”

This is being released nationwide in the UK on July 9th however if you are lucky enough to live near Selfridges you can pick yours up from June 28th, girls take note, just after my birthday (no prizes for guessing what will be top of my list this year) and I will be first in the queue, in fact I may even camp outside my local store overnight just so I can be the first one though the doors the next morning. There is no denying this is an expensive product at the rrp of £28, but as a die hard Chanel foundation fan this is actually less than I normally pay, big whoop on my part!

The big question – will this replace my beloved Vitalumiere Aqua? Do you know I reckon it just might! x

Garnier B.B. Cream: perfect for the summer.

I was recently given three free sample sachets of Garnier’s new Miracle Skin Perfecter B.B. Cream in light (I only have one left as I have used the other two, getting two applications out of each).

Garnier BB Cream Sample in Light

B.B. cream has exploded all over the beauty market in the west over the last few months, and is hailed as the middle ground of the tinted moisturiser-foundation spectrum. B.B. is nothing new is the eastern world, where women have been demanding richer more nourishing creams for their skin for a long time, but it is a fairly new phenomenon over here. Since the buzz about these was created it seems like every company and their mothers have brought out their own B.B. cream, from the extremely high ones to the lowest of the low end ones and everything in between.  In a market massively saturated with them currently it is very hard for a company to get their product noticed about the rest.

Garnier BB Cream in Light and Medium

I have to admit when I received these samples of Garnier’s B.B. cream I wasn’t massively excited. Garnier is a company that has many products that I like, but not many that I really love, and so I kinda expected this to be nice, but nothing majorly special. I was a touch concerned about the shade range as I can only find it in light and medium (as you can see above)in my local stores, and as you all know I am very very fair skinned and like my foundation to be medium to full coverage so I wondered if this would be a bit pointless for me.

Garnier BB Cream

First off is that this actually feels like a moisturiser, and an expensive one at that. It is nice and thick and from simply testing a tiny sized blob on my hand I could feel how soft and luminousness it left my skin once applied My very dry skin feels moisturised for most of the day with this on, and I have been using a night cream when I remove it with no ill effects to my skin at all. So as far as the moisturiser goes, this seemed good… now for the colour and coverage.

This shade actually really suits my skin, it doesn’t leave an orange tinge to it and isn’t really much too dark. To truly match my skin colour at the moment it could possibly do with being slightly lighter, but as I am planning on wearing this in the summer when I will be a bit darker I think this will be almost perfect by then.  I am seriously impressed that the light shade manages to match my skin so well, as mine is notoriously difficult to match up, with even the lightest shades being a bit too dark for me.

Swatch of Garnier BB Cream

N.B This looks more runny then it actually is because I had accidentally left it in the car in the sun all morning. Oops!

The coverage of this is really really good. I would say it is generally medium, but is also buildable. As it is so moisturising it feels and looks light on the skin and therefore doesn’t look cakey if you do build the product up. Because there is so much moisturiser in it, it of course leaves a dewy finish to the face. I like this, especially in the summer, but if it’s not your cup of tea a little powder over the top not only mattifies it a touch but it also increases it’s staying power. I applied this is in the morning with a little of Laura Mericer’s Translucent Loose Setting Powder over the top and it stayed in place pretty much all day.

Garnier BB Cream

Sorry for the grainy quality of this photo, it was taken with the front facing camera on my iPhone. I took this around five in the afternoon and gives some idea of how it stays, I had two fairly large blemishes on my chin and a rather red nose (just call me rudolph) that day which you still cant see many hours later… woo! I apply mine with my Beauty Blender which I described a while ago in my how to apply liquid foundation post.

Pros:

  • It really does moisturise and cover blemishes at the same time, meaning that you can skip a load of the products you probably use on a day to day basis.
  • It is so ideal in the summer when you don’t want to have too much on your skin in the hot weather. I would recommend keeping a pot of powder on you, because you will want to blot with it, something like my Laura Mercier Undercover Pot that I reviewed here would be ideal, as it contains powder and concealer and is tiny enough to be able to keep with you in your bag.
  • It has a nice subtle scent to it so is not in anyway too heavily fragranced.
  • It is only £9.99!!! This is such a bargain for a moisturiser and a foundation!

Cons:

  • To be honest there aren’t really any major cons other than the coverage isn’t totally full, it probably won’t suit every skin shade and it doesn’t last forever, but none of these are things I would expect it to do really.

Overall I really really like this product, it looks and feels really good on my skin and is very cheap compared to my normal moisturiser and foundation, what more could you ask for really? x

Perfect Purse Purchase: Mini Clinique High Impact Mascara

Clinique High Impact Mascara

I recently bought Cosmopolitan Magazine mostly because there was a choice of mini gifts from Clinique with it, their High Impact Mascara, their Superbalm Moisturising Gloss, their 7 Day Scrub Cream and their Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief.

I chose the high impact mascara, as I spent ages trying to get my hands on this at the clinique stores in boots while the swap offer was on, but to no avail.

Clinique High Impact Mascara

This is an iconic product renowned the world over for adding maximum volume with definition and length. Specially developed brush and formula work together to dramatically thicken lashes while separating. I had to admit I was curious to see if it lives up to its reputation.

Clinique High Impact Mascara

This has a thick, bristle wand, meaning you get a lot of product on the brush, but it isn’t a very large brush, which makes it easier to wield (in my case the perfect word, i’m not the neatest when it comes to mascara, in fact I managed to poke myself quite severally in the eye just 2 days ago).

Clinique High Impact Mascara

I have not had a lot of experience with Clinique, I have always associated it as being for older ladies, not as young and on trend as say MAC is, but I have no reason for this insane idea, and having seen more and more bloggers and YouTubers raving about Clinique products I decided to throw away my assumption (because of course it just makes an ass out of u and me when you assume! Ha, im so not funny) and give them a try!

The formula of this is very very smooth and almost creamy, it doesn’t feel at all clumpy or chunky when you pull the brush out of the case. If I am being honest it feels expensive, im not quite sure how a mascara does this, but somehow this manages it!

Clinique High Impact Mascara

See how long the lashes look and how separate they still are?

This is meant to be a multi-benefit mascara that adds maximum volume with definition and length while dramatically thicken lashes while separating as I said earlier, and It certainly does lengthen and separate the lashes but I didn’t really notice it thickening them too much.

I actually love the fact that this came in a mini tube as this now lives in my makeup pouch in my handbag for use when I am out and about. This definitely qualifies as a perfect purse purchase if you can get your hands on the mini one, but of course would still be great in the normal size.

This retails for £16 pounds, pricey no doubt, which makes me sad as I love it so. It has made me desperate to try their Bottom Lash Mascara as well. I could love that one simply for the beautiful packaging! This can be bought straight from their website for any clinique counter which of course are everywhere, and if you take in an old worn out mascara to participating stores or counters you can currently exchange if for one of these mini mascaras!
